Gift Ideas for your Kids on Valentine’s Day
I think gift giving is so fun because of the sentiment behind it, not necessarily because we get to buy new things. In fact, I always rack my brain to think of new ways to shower the kids with gifts without causing excessive clutter. Because it eventually becomes ‘stuff’. I may not always be in a relationship, so this means I might be single on Valentine’s Day, but I always have my kids so I think about what I can do for them.
Here are some of the recent things I’ve gotten for my kids for Valentine’s Day:
Flowers
Okay, I know they’re ridiculously expensive on this day of the year but they’re so fun and a nice tradition. I give my daughter a bouquet usually because I enjoy the thought of her expecting flowers and nice things. This happens to fit her personality. She’s always appreciative and I think kids aren’t used to getting things like this just for them so it’s a bit special. She picks out a vase to put them in and gets to enjoy them for about a week or so.
Large Valentine’s Heart Cookie
It’s a bit silly, bit I like that it’s consumable and a little cheesy, for a day that is full of that kind of stuff. It’s a sweet treat to enjoy that is so uniquely associated with this holiday, again, I’m a sucker for tradition and joining in the fun with others. And I always love a heart motif. The trick is that the cookie has to taste just as good as it looks.
A Day Out Activity
I let them choose where they want to go, whether it’s the movies or karaoke. We’ll do that and grab a bite to eat. It’s kind of like a date night I suppose, maybe we buy some of he Valentine’s chocolates while we’re out, but mostly it’s an excuse to be together and see what kind of celebratory specials we can take advantage of.
Getting away from gifting ‘stuff’
You’ll notice that these gift ideas are either consumables or experiences. It tends to be my go-to now because it also offers them the gift of not having to take care of something new, from now until they throw it away or donate it. That sounds like a big responsibility, doesn’t it, but that’s the relationship we have with our stuff (but that’s for another blog post).
Low or No-Cost Valentine’s Day Gift Idea
I can totally understand if you want to celebrate but aren’t ready to part with cash for a gift on this minor holiday. One idea I love is making a card for the kids. You even have the chance to get your creativity going. Even better, and depending on their age, you can pull together the materials you have on hand and do it as group activity. That way the gift is not just the card, but (most prized by young children) your time and attention.
Why I don’t skip Valentine’s Day
Aside from naturally liking pinks and reds and hearts and flowers and, of course love, I always enjoy taking a moment to celebrate and being a part of a tradition that marks different times of the year. Even if I’m short on time, I’ll pick up a box of chocolates for us to enjoy and call it a day.
No matter what type of pressure you’re feeling from all the perfectly crafted social media accounts showing the overflowing baskets of gifts that you can make for your kids, I offer a different and less maintenance version of a Valentine’s Day gift for your kiddos. No matter how old they are, they’ll love whatever you do for them
